Stereo and binocular camera modules: two eyes, one depth map

Two synchronized imagers, a baseline, and a host that can do the math.

A binocular camera copies what your eyes already do: two views, a known distance between them, depth from disparity. The old marketing page called this a lifestyle gadget. In OEM work it is a measurement tool. If the two sensors do not share a clock, or the baseline is a guess, you do not have stereo. You have two movies.

What has to be true

  • Two imagers with a locked baseline and a calibration that survives temperature.
  • Synchronous exposure. Rolling-shutter pairs in fast motion will disagree.
  • A host that can run the match: CPU, GPU, or an on-camera NPU.
  • A lens pair that actually covers the same world. Image circle and distortion have to be cousins.

Where it shows up

Robots and AMRs need a distance, not a pretty frame. Rider and cabin systems want a person in 3D, not a blob. Inspection wants fill level and gap. That is why we build both a compact AR0237 stereo USB module and CameVision EGO, a dual global-shutter AI stereo camera with an IMU per eye. EGO is not a UVC webcam. Treat it as a stereo computer.

If you are still choosing a single camera, start with interface and shutter, not with '3D' on a slide. USB is honest when the host is a PC. MIPI is honest when the host is a SoC. Stereo sits on top of that choice.
